Communications Officer

Reports to: Assistant Manager of Legal Services

Term: Fixed Term, July 2022 to 31 March 2023, 24hrs/wk.

Location: National Capital Region


NWAC’s Communications Officer must be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment to support, implement and monitor communications activities, including but not limited to, preparing communications strategies; developing, posting and promoting social media content; developing and distributing engaging online communications products (webpage content, blogs, videos, podcasts, etc.); and advising project managers on communications techniques and strategies.

General duties

Communications Officer will:

  1. Support the development of a communications strategy for various projects;
  2. Develop and distribute communications materials under the communications strategy, including website content, blogs, social media posters, promotional videos, and podcasts;
  3. Respond to media inquiries and arrange interviews; and
  4. Identify opportunities to promote awareness of the project and to encourage engagement with project activities.

Studies & Professional Qualifications

  • University degree in the area of communications, journalism, or related field;

Experience working with NGOs, organizations, interest groups and government, agencies or business/corporate entities in a communications role;

Experience using social media, website editing, desktop publishing software, online video recording and editing, and podcasting;

Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous Peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset; and,

Relevant experience working or volunteering with Not-for-Profit organizations or corporations is an asset.

Key Skills

Excellent skills generating and distributing online content to generate significant social media engagements;

Ability to develop and deliver creative content (text, image, video, and audio);

Experiencing using Canadian Press or other media-related style guide

Strong writing and verbal communication skills in English (fluency in French is a strong asset);

Strong networking, relationship-building and public speaking skills;

Excellent interpersonal skills;

Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions within the area, often on short notice;

Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure;

Ability to design, develop and implement communications initiatives using a variety of tools and platforms.

Work/Volunteer Experience

  • Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset;
  • Relevant experience working or volunteering with Not-for-Profit organizations or corporations is an asset.

Knowledge Requirements

Social media technology and techniques for promoting online content;

Videography technology and techniques especially related to online videos;

Planning, recording, editing and promoting podcasts/ online audio advertisements;

Graphic design and presentation software (PowerPoint);

SEO and Google Analytics;

Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;

Indigenous issues, norms and standards relevant to promotion and protection of Indigenous women’s rights; and

Issues impacting Indigenous women,girls and gender-diverse people in Canada and internationally.
