NWAC actively participates in the UNDRIP Act Implementation Project to ensure Indigenous women’s voices shape Canada’s Action Plan for implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Since the UNDRIP Act became law on June 21, 2021, NWAC has worked to gather feedback from constituents through engagement sessions, establish an advisory group of experts on Indigenous women’s issues, conduct gender-focused research, and communicate priorities to the Canadian government. While acknowledging the Act as an important step toward reconciliation, NWAC emphasizes that meaningful consultation with Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender-Diverse people is essential to fulfill UNDRIP’s promise of equal rights. The organization advocates for an Action Plan with specific, measurable commitments from responsible authorities, viewing inclusive engagement as a living embodiment of UNDRIP’s core values.
