NWAC champions equitable access to safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing for Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people—recognizing this as both a fundamental right and a critical foundation for community wellbeing. Our comprehensive approach addresses the complex historical, social, and structural barriers that have created housing insecurity across Indigenous communities.

Through strategic advocacy and partnerships, we’re working to expand housing options that meet diverse needs while supporting communities in developing sustainable, autonomous funding models. Our initiatives prioritize housing solutions that consider the unique environmental, social, and cultural contexts of Indigenous communities, with special attention to the challenges faced in Northern regions where infrastructure limitations compound housing difficulties.

NWAC’s 2020 housing report highlighted how colonial policies, particularly the Indian Act’s lending restrictions, have systematically undermined housing security for Indigenous peoples. By addressing these intersecting barriers while advocating for Indigenous-led solutions, we’re creating pathways to housing stability that honor traditional knowledge, strengthen community resilience, and support the holistic wellbeing of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.
